Marketplaces are beginning to support a simpler purchasing process: customers describe what they need to an AI agent, which identifies suitable options and helps complete the transaction.
Amazon’s Alexa+ platform illustrates this shift. Selected partners can integrate services that allow customers to book, order and pay through conversation. Supported categories include restaurant reservations, food ordering, home services, ticketing and rides. Services can also appear based on customer intent, without the customer requesting a specific provider.
Shopify is developing similar infrastructure, enabling merchants to make their products available across AI platforms. Capabilities vary: some channels support direct checkout, while others refer customers to the merchant’s website.
For marketplace operators, this creates an additional distribution channel. Their inventory and transaction systems can serve customers who never visit their app or website. Accurate product data, current availability and reliable ordering functions therefore become essential to participating in agent-led commerce.
As agents increasingly mediate purchases, control over customer discovery may shift from marketplaces to AI platforms. Businesses will need to compete for inclusion in an agent’s recommendations, making ranking transparency and commercial incentives increasingly consequential.
